"Ten years ago, everybody said face-to-face meetings were in trouble," says Tony Pastor, manager of conference services for Stamford, Connecticut-based McKinsey & Company about the advent of technologies such as web-casting and videoconferencing that seemed to threaten the viability of the meetings industry. But a surprise was in store: "Rather than transforming in-person meetings to web-based meetings," says Pastor, "we embraced new technologies, expanded our learning opportunities."

Technology has, indeed, changed the meetings industry: It has accelerated program pace, encouraged corporations and associations to set more and higher goals, and it has put an onus on meeting planners and facilities to create the environments that will enable organizations to achieve these goals.
