Dec. 8--When Wendy Fanta went shopping at 1 a.m. at Carolina Place Mall the day after Thanksgiving, she was struck by the heavy markdowns.

Two weeks after "Black Friday," she said, she's still haunting toy and clothing stores and finding sales at more stores than last year.

"People want to see sale signs and get a coupon," said Fanta, a homemaker.

If Fanta's husband is worrying about how much his wife is spending, so are retailers -- but for a different reason.
