Dec. 6--When the new toy came into Creative Kidstuff, saleswoman Shannon Ingersoll thought it was the stupidest thing she had ever seen. It was a curve of brightly colored plastic shaped like a turtle shell with two holes in the side. What was its point?

But then, she brought it home. Her three girls sat in it and spun. They used it to mold sand castles. The 2-year-old wore it on her head and later flipped it over to use as a doll cradle. The older girls tied jump ropes to it and used it to haul things to the top of the backyard play structure during an improvised game of pirates.

"We're so used to toys that perform a specific function," Ingersoll says. "I was skeptical kids would find it entertaining. And I was so wrong."

The Bilibo, as it's called, is a perfect example of an open-ended toy designed to put a child's imagination in the driver's seat. For those who have seen a child amuse himself for hours with a huge cardboard box, the Bilibo's popularity shouldn't come...
