This is the second in the series of articles on Making It Work When Times are Tough. In last week's column, we talked about responding to the pain of adversity. If "pain is inevitable and learning is optional", how can we make sure we capture the learning? If "doing what comes naturally" tends to get us into trouble, how can we choose the "un-natural act" of responding positively?

To begin with, let's look at the "natural" reactions that many people experience when facing problems. We can summarize the process by saying people lash out, tune out, hide out, and bum out.

* Lashing Out: We often find it too painful to admit responsibility, so we look for someone or something to blame. Rather than be accountable for our own behavior, we attribute our pain to the company, the spouse, the economy, or the news. We attack others...
