Sep. 1--MASHPEE -- Shortly after 5 last evening, a steady crawl of cars and trucks waited four or five deep to fill up at the Mobil Station near the Mashpee Rotary.

Compared with Johnny's Tune and Lube a half mile down Route 28 -- which finished business yesterday charging an eye-popping $3.50 for a single gallon of regular unleaded gasoline -- the $2.79 Mobil sticker price was a bargain.

But it was too good to be true. An attendant in an orange reflective vest started replacing price signs and customers winced as rates spiked before their eyes to $2.91 a gallon, with premium easily topping $3.

"I almost drove off the road," said Mark Stevens of Mashpee, who had filled up on Monday at Johnny's for $2.67 a gallon. "I know things are all screwed up, but this is ridiculous."

The first three weeks of August challenged gas consumers across the country.
