That's a patent for technology that could be used to help researchers solve complex problems using computer databases, and it was awarded to a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute researcher in April, and the university has made it available for license.

The technology underlies one of dozens of patents RPI receives each year, from a sensor used to help train people to use fire extinguishers to a solar electric panel built directly into a building.

The problem-solving technology may one day become part of a startup company's business plan or licensed by a larger firm. Or, like many other inventions at universities, it may sit on the proverbial shelf.
