Aug. 7--The Randalls have a rule: Before you enter the family business full time, you must work somewhere else for at least two years.

So in his early 20s, Brett Randall left Pittsburgh and the security he had known working summers and part-time jobs at Traco, the door and window manufacturer run by his father and founded by his grandparents in 1943.

"As a kid I worked in the plant, on construction, installing windows and in customer service," Brett Randall, 36, recalled.

But after studying history at Carnegie Mellon University, Randall landed in the Washington, D.C., area in 1992 as a project manager for a commercial real estate firm. He returned to Pittsburgh in 1993 and worked as assistant to the president at a Washington County sportswear business before joining Traco in 1995 to manage a window plant the company had purchased in Iowa.
