Mar. 17--The government's success in winning a fraud conviction against former WorldCom Inc. Chief Executive Bernard Ebbers could encourage prosecutors to take on similar cases that aren't necessarily slam-dunks, experts said.

Ebbers was convicted Tuesday of orchestrating a massive financial fraud at WorldCom, which spiraled into the biggest U.S. bankruptcy ever. He claimed ignorance, essentially, and the case lacked a smoking gun, such as incriminating e-mails.

That made it a challenge--and a significant victory--for federal prosecutors.

"The Justice Department has to be encouraged by the prosecution in this case, given how circumstantial the evidence was against Mr. Ebbers," said Michael Missal, a partner at Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, Nicholson & Graham in Washington, who served as the...
