The number of corporate meeting buyers who have authority to overrule an internal meeting sponsor's choice of meeting destination or site has increased, but a new survey shows that most companies still are reluctant to equip buyers with that kind of authority, even as the meeting industry's focus on site selection management as a cost-saving mechanism grows.

According to an exclusive Meetings Monitor survey of 204 corporate meeting buyers, 29 percent of respondents said they gained authority to influence or choose the sites or destinations of meetings within the past 12 months. Though this illustrates the attempts many corporations have made to better align site selection with preferred transient hotel contracts and the hub locations of preferred carriers, the survey also shows 74 percent of respondents have not overruled a sponsor's choice of destination or site in...
