TODAY'S CONTRACTOR is challenged like never before. While in the short run some poor contractors can and will exist, over the long haul only the good survive. But as Jim Collins, author of the business book "Good to Great" has said, "Good is the enemy of great."

In pursuit of creating great contractors, a new tool has been created and the bar for performance excellence has been raised. We call this tool the High-Performing Contractor Assessment Model.

In 2002, the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association commissioned a task force to create a method for defining and assessing high-performing contractors. The purpose was to make good contractors great and even great contractors excellent, thus, helping the contractors to become the contractor of choice of their customers. The task force coordinated the research and development of the High-Performing Contractor Assessment Model. The model was finalized in early 2003 and is available to SMACNA members....
