Whether travel buyers donned new hats, hefted bulkier ones or fit under new umbrellas, the incessant downpour of the past three years has, at the least, led to the cultivation of more on-the-job satisfaction, the reaping of more recognition from senior executives and the yielding of higher salaries.

The rainbow in the cloud for buyers, though, stems from the erratic economic environment itself, which has magnified the need for travel management expertise--even amid major corporate staffing cutbacks--and served to highlight buyers' raison d'etre, according to BTN's 2003 Travel Manager Salary & Attitude Survey.

Simultaneously, the fickle fiscal state of affairs--in addition to the extensive cost-cutting feats they already have achieved--is making some buyers uncertain about their futures. For instance, while 50 percent of all travel buyer respondents said travel management offers them more opportunity than it did two years ago, the number of buyers subscribing to this viewpoint has decreased from 68 percent in 2001.
