Leading a strategic sourcing. (Best Practices).

Nancy Godfrey, manager of global travel for ChevronTexaco, developed and implemented a best practice in creating a strategic planning process to consolidate travel management company services for her global company with a non-mandate culture. Beginning in January of last year, she clearly defined goals and communicated procedures for sourcing and eventually managing suppliers that were embraced by corporate managers across 30 divisions and four world regions.

Godfrey's goal was to create the infrastructure through the consolidation of agency services that would enable the company to collect data so that it could better negotiate and manage its global airline contracts and more accurately determine what it saves through the program.

Her efforts to not only articulate her vision, but also to educate company managers so they could share it will come to full fruition with an agency selection by the end of this month and an implementation in the key countries by the end of this year.

Agency selection is being made based on responses to requests for proposals from the top agencies, a11 of which the company already was using For Godfrey, the agency selection is only one phase of a multi-layered strategic global implementation of travel management at ChevronTexaco that includes airline sourcing, policy standardization and the increased use of online booking.
