Article Excerpt Tasked with developing a consolidated global travel program in the wake of the December 2000 merger between GlaxoWellcome and SmithKline Beecham, director of global travel procurement Janan Johnson completed a 34-country initiative just 13 months after the pharmaceutical giant selected a single, worldwide travel management company. The result is an integrated global program, harnessing the resources, procurement methodologies and service quality principles of the worldwide enterprise, without losing sight of local business requirements and travel service delivery needs.
Her efforts began in March 2001 as the GlaxoSmithKline integration team solicited feedback from worldwide operations. Throughout the second half of 2001 and all of 2002, Johnson led the company's global agency bid process, created with winning bidder Business Travel International a global account management team and data warehouse, globalized supplier relationships, launched an online booking system, aligned travel policies of the heritage companies and incorporated into the trave1 program specific purchasing processes and service metrics.
Three regional meetings in March 2001--in London, Mexico and Singapore--enabled each, of 28 initial participating countries to present to the integration team its travel-related business needs, spelled out in AQSCI: assurance of supply, quality, service, cost and innovation. "That helped us build, from the bottom up, our business requirements," Johnson said. "We brought people together and talked without any preconceived notions about which agency it would be."
