Pricing aside, travel managers are paying increased attention to two areas as the requests for hotel proposals leading to 2004 negotiated rates get underway this summer: the availability of high-speed Internet access and the security practices in place at hotels to ensure travelers' safety.

Neither hot button is surprising. Given travelers' need to stay in contact with their offices through e-mail, convenient and cost-effective high-speed access has become critical to remaining productive while on the road. Similarly, almost two years after the September 2001 terrorist attacks, travel managers remain sensitive to anything security-related. Terror alerts issued periodically by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security since then have kept the topic top of mind for buyers.
