Just when we at Ritz-Canton thought business might be turning around earlier this year, rumors of war in the Middle East came true and expectations were lowered to more realistic levels. Although we did not view the situation as "the glass is half full," most of us believed we could tough it out for a predicted short war. Enter the wild card of 2003: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, soon known by the acronym SARS. For the travel industry, this battle ended up causing more damage than the war in Iraq, and the aftermath is still being counted. The World Health Organization currently estimates $10 billion in costs to the travel-related industries.
