When the St. Regis Hotel on East 55th Street in April unexpectedly shut down Lespinasse, operators of other New York hotel destination restaurants had reason to wonder if these restaurants' popularity--and the popularity of their celebrity chefs--had come to a sudden end. To the contrary, a number of hotel managers whose properties house such upscale restaurants last month said that the set of circumstances surrounding Lespinasse's closing was unique. Despite the continuing economic downturn, they said the destination restaurants still are drawing both hotel guests and diners from the community--and much needed visibility to their properties.
