Like transient business hotels in Chicago, the city's corporate housing market has been affected adversely by the lagging economy, with decreased levels of corporate relocations and long-term consulting assignments. Just as Chicago's transient hotels in 2002 and 2003 have found ways to adapt to changing business travel patterns, however, three of the city's leading providers of corporate apartments have tweaked their business model to make the most of their niche's price-value equation.

"Certainly, we're affected by the economy because corporations are being especially careful about relocating people," said Diana Barthel, regional director of sales for Chicago for Marriott ExecuStay, a division of Marriott International.
