With remarkable consistency across the spectrum of functions, corporate travel managers in 2003 want their agency partners to handle more duties for them than they did in the 1997 survey. While the economically driven ebb and flow of the outsourcing wave is one cause, industry experts said the influx of procurement and sourcing methodologies into travel management is a bigger factor.

Meanwhile, buyers are warning one another about the potential for some agencies to sell senior management on the idea that they don't need a travel manager.

According to BTNs research, more travel buyers in 2003 want their agency partners to handle such aspects of the program that traditionally have been in the agency purview as hiring and training res agents, finding the lowest fares and providing data reporting.
