The opening in January of the deluxe waterfront Delamar Greenwich Harbor Hotel is the latest evidence that such Connecticut cities as Greenwich, Stamford and New Haven constitute a viable hotel market in their own right. At the same time, however, the Connecticut market in 2002 remained a hybrid-self-contained on the one hand, but still strongly connected to the fortunes of the much larger New York City market.

Given the faltering economy, Connecticut hotels were able to position themselves as cost-effective alternatives to comparable facilities in New York. Many travel managers and meeting planners, facing budget constraints, responded to this dollar-and-cents message.
