For five consecutive years, Hyatt has occupied the number-one spot in the crowded upscale category of the Top U.S. Hotel Chain Survey. Through the long seller's market to today's more humbling buyer's market, Hyatt consistently has found favor with survey respondents, who this year gave it the highest scores on seven of the 13 criteria they were asked to weigh.

In a year that saw the lodging industry roiled by concerns of buyers trading down to less expensive alternatives, causing other brands to cut rates to protect their base, Hyatt rose above the fray, earning high points for the overall relationship of its price to the value offered. On an eighth criteria--facilities for resort meetings--Hyatt tied with Walt Disney World Resorts, which this year placed second in the upscale category.
