The growth in remote conferencing in 2002 has translated into actual meeting savings for a fair number of corporations. Spurred by severe travel and meeting cost-reduction efforts at many companies, and traveler unease in the wake of 2001's terror attacks, more than half of the respondents to an exclusive Meetings Today poll said spending was reduced last year through at least one kind of remote conferencing.

Teleconferencing and Webconferencing received the most attention from the 109 buyers, with 54 percent saying their companies used those technologies to cut meeting spend. That number was lowered to 43 percent when respondents were asked if videoconferencing was in use as a cost-saving tool....
