Course Syllabus:
Lesson 1 Syllabus Whether you’re an aspiring graphic artist or a weekend photographer, Photoshop is an adventure that can take you places you never dreamed of. So today, let the journey begin! First we'll learn a little bit of history about the program. Then you'll take your first steps into the Photoshop world—creating and saving an image.
Lesson 2 Syllabus Photoshop has an undeserved reputation for being difficult, but in this lesson you'll see what a pleasure its painting tools can be to use. So today's lesson is all about the Brush tool—the key to retouching photos and understanding how Photoshop handles colors. Even if you're neither artistic nor creative, you'll be amazed at what you can achieve with this fun and amazing tool.
Lesson 2 Objective Use the Photoshop interface to open and save files and undo mistakes.
Lesson 3 Syllabus Sepia is a very popular look for photos, and in this lesson, you’ll learn how to add a sepia tone to an image. We'll also look at the Eraser tool. You’d never think that an Eraser tool could help you to combine or restore images, but it’s all part of Photoshop's magic. And finally, you’ll see how you can use the Brush tool to help improve under- or over-exposed photos.
Lesson 3 Objective Discover the Paintbrush tool, how to work with colors, and how to create and save custom palettes.
Lesson 4 Syllabus Photoshop, as wonderful as it is, is still a computer program. It has to be told what to do. Today, you’ll learn the critical skill of making selections—telling Photoshop what part of an image you want it to work on. You’ll also practice creating vignettes, which are photos with an opaque center that falls off to a very soft edge. That's a great technique to use on a portrait when you don’t like its original background. Because making selections can be time-consuming, we'll explore a handy technique for saving and reusing your selections.
Lesson 4 Objective Use the Eraser tool, navigate, and colorize images.
Lesson 5 Syllabus Have you ever looked at two of your photos and thought, “Gee I wish I had that sky behind this photo”? Today, you’ll get the chance to put two images together to change the background.
Lesson 5 Objective Work with the Marquee tool to make rectangular, square, elliptical, and circular selections that you copy, paste, move, and duplicate.
Lesson 6 Syllabus This is the lesson that makes students wonder if they gave up on art too soon. Photoshop’s brushes are amazing and fun to create, even if you can’t figure out what you’d paint with them. You can make brushes that change color as you paint and that seem to dance across an image. You can invent brushes from any section of a photo and stamp them onto your image. Today's the day to forget about making art and just remember the sheer fun of playing!
Lesson 6 Objective Use the Freehand Lasso and the Magic Wand tool to create, add to, subtract from, and intersect with other selections in both normal and Quick Mask modes.
Lesson 7 Syllabus Gradients are fountains of color that encompass all the colors in a blend between a starting and an ending color (like the sky at sunset). The gradients you can create in Photoshop are endless and exciting. If your photos are anything like mine, you have lots of pictures that could benefit from more color or a new treatment for the background. Today you’ll learn how to make a portrait much more exciting by adding a gradient to it.
Lesson 7 Objective Create brushes using a variety of methods and painting modes.
Lesson 8 Syllabus Today, you'll learn to use Photoshop’s History features to undo what you've done to an image and to recapture how it looked a number of steps back. In the process, we'll explore a neat way to get rid of most of the dust and scratches on your photos in just a few steps.
Lesson 8 Objective Select, design, and save gradients using the Gradient tool.
Lesson 9 Syllabus Whether you want to add type to a scrapbook layout, make large type for display, or learn a little bit about Photoshop’s Layer Styles, you’ll enjoy this lesson. Here's your chance to try your hand at making type that warps and wiggles. Then you'll see what you can do with text on your own.
Lesson 9 Objective Use the History brush and the History palette to remove dust spots from images and combine history states. Create snapshots.
Lesson 10 Syllabus Have you ever printed an image and later wondered how it got so small (or so large)? We'll solve that mystery today. You’ll learn how to make them exactly the right size, whether that right size is for print or for the Web. You’ll also discover ways to make your images print their best. And after this lesson, you'll know how to scan an image so it’s large enough, but not too large, and how to crop images so you only see what you really want to see.
Lesson 10 Objective Set, edit, adjust, and warp type using the Type tool, and set type on a circle.
Lesson 11 Syllabus Did the dog leave tooth marks in Grandma’s picture? Does baby have red eyes? You'll learn to fix all of these photo problems and more in today's lesson. You’ll discover how to create picture-perfect skin tones that any teen would swoon over. If you’ve been waiting to learn the basics of photo retouching, this lesson is for you.
Lesson 11 Objective Crop and resize or resample images and calculate the pixels needed for various output methods.
Lesson 12 Syllabus Sometimes you mean to take an image with a yellow color cast; sometimes you don’t. If yellow (or purple, or blue) wasn’t quite the color you had in mind for the photo, you can use Photoshop to fix it. You can’t work miracles all the time, but often you can take a flawed image and make it look almost perfect! So in this final lesson, we'll explore Photoshop techniques that you can use to improve just about any photography error—short of leaving the lens cap on!
Lesson 12 Objective Use the Dodge, Burn, Sponge, Healing Brush, and Clone Stamp tools to correct exposure, focus, and red-eye problems in photographs and to repair damaged or missing image detail.
