Course Overview:
What makes an effective Web site? Page layout, navigation, aesthetics, color, typography, readability, graphics, multimedia, interactivity, and animation all play a part in creating a satisfying experience for your visitors. However, in order to create a durable Web site, you'll also need to how to structure your site so that you communicate your ideas clearly and in the most effective manner possible.

This course will help you become familiar with good user interface design techniques that will allow your visitors to navigate your site with ease. You'll also understand how users read on the Web and the characteristics of effective Web writing. You'll learn important graphic design principles and how to use a variety of tools to enhance your pages.

If you're already designing Web sites, this course will take your works to the next level. The importance of reshaping traditional design skills and applying them to Web pages and Web sites will be emphasized throughout the course.

Instructor Biography:
Patricia Franks has over 20 years of experience as a college educator, teaching courses in Web development, information management, communication, e-commerce, and desktop publishing. Patricia is a frequent presenter at workshops and conferences on the local, state, and national levels including conferences held by CIT, ARMA, WebCT, and AACE. She has created Web sites for several professional organizations and is completing her studies toward a Ph.D. in Organization and Management with a specialization in e-business.

Lesson 1 Syllabus Form vs Function
Lesson 2 Syllabus Web Site Planning Process
Lesson 2 Objective You will begin to understand the tension between form versus function when designing and creating web pages. You will learn how to determine the purposes and objectives of your website before you build it. You'll learn the key elements of creating the conceptual design including identifying your target audience and determining the purpose of your website.
Lesson 3 Syllabus Interface Design
Lesson 3 Objective You'll explore the six major stages of the web site development process. You'll become familiar with the three parts of web design and the skills that must be brought to each. You'll have the opportunity to exercise your design skills locating and evaluating one web site you could use as a model for your course project.
Lesson 4 Syllabus Site Structure
Lesson 4 Objective You will learn the basics of user-centered design including navigation aids, design integrity and stability, and graceful degradation. You will create a home page for your restaurant providing a user-centered interface based upon what you have learned in this lesson.
Lesson 5 Syllabus Site Design
Lesson 5 Objective You will learn the five basic steps to organizing information and the four essential structures that can be used to build a web site. You'll learn how to develop a statement of functions and understand the site elements you can use to provide functionality to your site.
Lesson 6 Syllabus Page Design
Lesson 6 Objective You will learn how site design themes can be used for information delivery and explore the elements present in websites designed primarily to act as information resources. You'll learn how to use navigation elements to enhance the users' experience.
Lesson 7 Syllabus Typography on the Web
Lesson 7 Objective You'll become familiar with design considerations such as visual hierarchy, page dimensions, and white space. You'll learn to layout effective web pages using design grids, tables, and images.
Lesson 8 Syllabus Cascading Style Sheets
Lesson 8 Objective You'll read a brief history of the evolution of written communication with a special emphasis on the history of typography and some of the early masters of type design. You'll learn of the limitations of typography on the web and tricks designers use to work around those limitations.
Lesson 9 Syllabus Writing for the Web
Lesson 9 Objective You will learn how Cascading Style Sheets work and how and when they should be used. You will become familiar with inline, document-level, and external style sheets.
Lesson 10 Syllabus Web Graphics
Lesson 10 Objective You'll learn how users read on the web and the characteristics of effective web writing. You'll become familiar with the use of titles, headlines, and subheads to assist readers in navigating your site and be able to understand the types of links used in websites and the challenges they pose.
Lesson 11 Syllabus Incorporating Multimedia
Lesson 11 Objective You'll learn about web graphics and color usage. You'll become familiar with the following concepts: transparency, interlacing, dithering, animated gifs, tiling, alt tags, and image maps. You'll create an image map to be used in your course project.
Lesson 12 Syllabus Adding Layers
Lesson 12 Objective You'll explore the ways in which multimedia is currently being used in websites and the ways in which it may be incorporated in the future. You'll learn to insert sound and video into your website. Streaming media will be introduced.
